What is The Cause of Procrastination?

Personal Development / Mindset

Procrastinating is more than just delaying the accomplishment of a task. We all run late for something at some point in our lives. But, when you adopt the mindset of a chronic procrastinator, you begin to see tasks and responsibilities as nothing but hindrances.

You also begin to see yourself as a “victim,” because you have to “do so much.” In most cases, habitual procrastinators make a point to do nothing most of the time, so this reality negates any rationalization that a procrastinator is overloaded with things to do. If nothing is being done in the first place, how can someone be overloaded?

Psychological Cause of Procrastination + Outside Factors

Why do people procrastinate or, better yet, why do people eventually become habitual procrastinators? What are the causes of procrastination really? Here are some of the top reasons:

1.    Personal fear of the results – Doing something means you are aiming to produce a specific result or outcome. Some people are always secretly afraid of what will happen if they do accomplish certain tasks.

They fear the outcome, and the possible consequences of this outcome. When a person secretly fears results, he is almost always afraid of change as well.

2.    Rebelling against people – If a person feels that he is not getting sufficient recognition for his work, or he feels that his work is pointless, he may think of rebellion as a good way of channeling all the anger and negativity that he has bottled up inside. Also, not doing something is an effective way of catching someone else’s attention. Do you see the connection between rebellion and procrastinating now?

3.    Fear of succeeding and failing – People who are afraid of success aren’t really afraid of the idea of succeeding. They are afraid of people’s expectations after they have succeeded.

Expectations tend to put a lot of pressure on people, and this just might push someone to procrastinate, so that people won’t end up thinking that he is excellent at what he does. On the flipside, some individuals are afraid of failing.

So, instead of doing the best they can, they procrastinate so they won’t have to deal with the idea of failing at something, because they have already chosen the path that leads to failure.

There will be no expectations, and no heartache that something did not work out. This is like creating a faulty machine on purpose, because the creator is afraid that the machine will not work perfectly. It is self-sabotage at its very worst.

4.    Insufficient pleasure – Pleasure is a powerful driving force that can either motivate or dissuade the most stubborn of minds. If a person is already stubborn, and he finds his work distasteful, boring, or undesirable, he will procrastinate, and he will try to find activities that bring pleasure or enjoyment instead.

5.    Stress – People who lack the ability to manage stress effectively procrastinate because their body and minds have become too strained from all the stress.

The Cause of Procrastinating? – It’s All In Your Mind! (Almost).
