It is no secret that bonsai trees can really spruce up indoor and outdoor spaces – this is probably the biggest reason why there is a definite revival of the unique bonsai art in many parts of the world. (Image Credit: Bonsai at the gardens of pagoda Yunyan Ta, Mr. Tickle, Wikimedia Commons.)

Bonsai trees are used to beautify meditation gardens, patios, and even living rooms. If you are interested in buying one yourself, then you are probably wondering where you can actually get one. Obviously, the Internet has really expanded access to the market, and you can probably order one online.

However, I do not recommend this to people who want a truly hardy specimen, because you will not be able to examine the bonsai tree up close before buying it. If you are serious about bonsai art, then it is best to buy the bonsai tree in person, so you can select a tree that suits your artistic vision.

Where to Buy a Bonsai Tree – The Best Place!

The absolute best place to buy a bonsai tree is a bonsai dealer or a commercial plant nursery that specializes in growing miniature trees. I am saying that this is your best option because, when you visit a bonsai dealer, you will be able to select a tree that is well-suited to the idea that you have in mind, and you can also ask the dealer himself how to take care of the tree.

It is very important that you have someone to consult with when you are taking care of a bonsai tree. Bonsai dealers have intimate knowledge of the inner workings of potted trees. They may also be able to offer classes on taking care of bonsai trees that you can attend with fellow enthusiasts.

When deciding on what kind of tree you should use for your first bonsai project, it is best to select one that the dealer knows is best for beginners. Ideal trees for beginners are usually vigorous growers, and are generally not sensitive to transplantation.

Trees like junipers (or ficuses) are also recommended for beginners, because they are easy to prune, shape, and wire. A juniper tree might not look attractive to some because of its slender trunk, but working on one can really help improve your grasp of various bonsai-related skills.

It is also ideal if you are able to acquire a small set of tools for your bonsai project. A pair of sharp scissors is recommended for shaping leaves, cutting off buds, and severing twigs or soft branches for ramification. For thicker branches that don’t easily break off, you will need a small saw.

Saws that are suitable for bonsai trees have fine teeth, and can easily be slipped in between branches with foliage. Purchase one that “feels right” when you hold it, so you are able to use it comfortably when performing delicate operations on your bonsai tree.

Bonsai trees can become disfigured if larger branches are not removed properly. If a large branch has become too woody, it is best if you chiseled out the stump left by the sawed-off branch. A small chisel can help you remove the stump so that the scarring will not deface the surface of the trunk.
