Fatty Liver Pain: Should You Be Worried?

This pain is normal, and if you have been examined by your doctor then there is probably nothing to worry about. A liver test will reveal if you have fatty liver, and further imaging studies will reveal the extent of the fatty liver.

A liver biopsy, on the other hand will be necessary to rule out NASH or Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis or liver inflammation due to fatty liver disease. If you haven’t yet been examined by your physician, it is absolutely necessary to visit your doctor.

There are many liver conditions that produce pain, not just fatty liver disease or NASH. For example, the pain may be due to scarring of the liver (fibrosis) or end-stage, advanced scarring of the whole liver (cirrhosis).

Fatty Liver Disease Causes

Fatty liver disease is often caused by obesity, cardiovascular disease, and activities such as smoking. People who are diagnosed with NAFLD or NASH are advised against smoking, as tobacco consumption is contra-indicative of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Can a person acquire fatty liver disease even if he is not overweight? The answer is yes if the NAFLD patient has a family history of liver dysfunction. In short, fatty liver disease may manifest if a person has the genetic predisposition for it.

Fatty Liver Disease Treatment

The most effective treatment for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is dieting and regular exercise. These activities may seem too simple and innocuous to many people, but combined, diet and exercise can truly bring about great, positive changes in a person’s body. Ask any doctor worth his license, and he will inform you that the most effective way to reduce fat in the liver is through rigorous and regular exercise.

The ideal amount of exercise per day is at least 20 minutes of cardio exercise, and 10 minutes of weight training. Combined that will only be 30 minutes of your time.

You can exercise in the morning, afternoon, or evening – it’s up to you. Morning exercise is recommended, because it helps people to sleep at night, but if you do not have time in the morning, then by all means, perform your exercises at night.

Getting good results with dieting is easy, too. Avoid simple carbohydrates as much as possible, and stick to carbohydrate sources that are complex and nutritious.

If you can consume more vegetables than pasta, bread, or rice, then that will be an amazing beginning for you. If you are a diabetic, then a fatty liver diet will also benefit your other condition, as vegetables in general can help regulate blood glucose levels because they are not digested quickly.

What about fruits? Due to the sugar content of fruits (fructose also packs calories), limit your consumption of fruits to ½ cup to 1 cup per day. The extra sugar should be able to help you with your exercise. Do not overdo your fruits, and pick fruits that are not too sweet. If you have to eat sweet fruits like blueberries, 1/3 to ½ cup per meal should be enough.
