Skin Lightening Home Remedies – Basics and Recommendations
1. If you want to use a commercial whitening agent alongside natural remedies, ask your dermatologist about retinoic acid or retinol. Retinoic acid (a derived form of vitamin A) is used to stimulate hair growth and reduce pigmentation on the surface of the skin.
It is one of the most widely used whitening remedies on the market because it is relatively inexpensive and, with continued use, it can be very effective.
Retinoic acid is often available as a standalone remedy in cream or ointment form. Some whitening products may include small quantities of retinoic acid (as an active ingredient). If you want the full benefit of retinoic acid alone, find a cream that contains this active ingredient only.
2. Are you afraid of skin bleaches and other pharmaceutical remedies for whitening the skin? If you are, you may want to try papaya soap. Papaya soap is manufactured mostly in Asia (like in India and the Philippines) and the most popular brands contain organic emollients to keep the skin soft while whitening it.
The active ingredient in these papaya soaps is papain. Papain is a naturally occurring enzyme in the papaya fruit that has an exfoliating effect when applied to the skin. This particular enzyme helps renewed skin to appear on the surface.
If your skin is a few shades darker than before due to sun exposure, using papaya soap daily is a gentle way to bring back the former color of your skin. The whitening effect is limited by your genes though; papaya soap can only make your skin as white as your genes will allow.
If you are naturally tan, your skin will become lighter as you continue using papaya soap, but your skin will always have this lightly tanned look to it, which is perfectly fine.
3. One of the simplest ways to lighten the skin is to apply freshly squeezed lime or lemon juice to target skin areas. You will need fresh juice, as commercial juices contain lots of unnecessary chemicals and additives that will not help you accomplish your goal.
Daily applications of lime or lemon juice will naturally bleach your skin, making it look lighter. Use a clean cloth or cotton balls to apply the juice to your skin. Let the fresh juice stay on your skin for at least half an hour to maximize the lightening effect of the juice. Feel free to apply emollients and wash with gentle soap afterward.
