There is this big misconception that leg muscles aren’t worth a dime when you are bodybuilding. This is the reason why so many people concentrate on only on their upper bodies when working out. If you don’t do the necessary work to develop your leg muscles, you are going to end up looking like Johnny Bravo (if you know the cartoon character). Johnny has huge chest muscles and rippling biceps and triceps; however, his legs are disproportionately tiny compared to the rest of his body.

Of course, you will not literally look like Johnny Bravo, but you probably are getting the idea of what we mean by proportion when it comes to developing your muscles. Now, it is important that you start working on your calf muscles, because strong calf muscles can actually help you lift bigger and heavier weights.

The calves also support your body when you are on the treadmill or bike. If you are a member of a gym, you can get a good calf workout by using a stationary bike (avoid recumbent bikes), the Stairmaster, or by walking briskly on a treadmill that has a good inclined angle. All of these cardio exercises challenge the calves, and make them really strong, too. You will feel the change after a few weeks: your legs will become leaner, and those rock-hard calf muscles will begin to show.

If you have access to a squat rack, you can perform weighted calf raises. Weighted calf raises are more effective if you can place half of your feet on a small, elevated surface, so that your toes are higher than your heels.

Place the barbell on your back, and lift your body weight so that your heels become level with the rest of your feet (which are on a slightly elevated surface). With a single movement you will begin to feel your calves reacting to the force of gravity and your own weight.
