How Do Electronic Cigarettes Work? – A Beginners Guide

Health / Smoking Cessation Aids

You may have seen people using electronic cigarettes in malls, parks, and basement parking lots. You may have also seen or heard advertisements for it on television and the radio. You are probably interested in trying it, but aren’t quite sure if it’s safe, or how it works exactly.

If you are wondering how e-cigs work and how you can use one to aid in your smoking cessation efforts, then you’ve come to the right place. The first thing that we want to discuss with you, before we move on to the specifics of how these devices work, is what e-cigs are and what they are not.

Electronic cigarettes are electronic devices, or tools, used to deliver vapors to the mouthpiece of the device. That is the long and short of its actual function.

Electronic cigarettes are made from plastic and stainless steel, and do not make use of real tobacco leaves which are present in cigars and cigarettes. We have met our fair share of people who thought at the outset that e-cigs contain some amount of tobacco.

The truth of the matter is they don’t. An e-cig may look exactly like a lit cigarette, and may even “light up” because of an LED light at one end, but it’s never going to be the same as a real cigarette, because it wasn’t manufactured from rolled paper and dried tobacco leaves.

Again, we have to emphasize that you do not have to add any tobacco leaves to an electronic cigarette in order to use it. It is not the same as using a vaporizing machine to extract nicotine from raw materials, such as medicinal leaves. Those are completely different machines, manufactured for a different set of tasks.

How do these devices work? Let’s take a closer look at the design of an electronic cigarette so you will know exactly what you will be using when you purchase one online:

How Electronic Cigarettes Work – e-Cigs Design

1.    An electronic cigarette works primarily because it has a special digitized sensor that allows the device to detect when it is in use. This breath sensor sends a signal to the atomizer so that vapors can be produced.

2.    When you draw in a breath through an electronic cigarette, the atomizer, which is linked to a rechargeable battery, heats a small amount of vapor juice. When this special juice is heated, vapors escape and are routed to the mouthpiece of the electronic cigarette. Since the vapors are produced through heating, they will feel somewhat warm in your mouth. However, they will not leave any lingering odor in the air, unlike ordinary cigarettes made from tobacco.

3.    The vapor juice that is used to produce the vapors is contained in a small receptacle in the outer body of the electronic cigarette. When the initial “load,” or supply of vapor juice, has been consumed, you can buy more and load them easily into the main chamber of the electronic cigarette.
