However, this discussion article will bring to the fore the basic realities of getting a job as game tester. If you are here because you are serious about getting a job as a game tester, you have to deal with facts, not myths and the personal fantasies of hopefuls.

Job as a Game Tester – Hard Facts

Here they are:

1. The skills that you will need to survive in the field of professional quality assurance or game testing can be acquired through formal training (on the job training) and through continuous experience.

Experience in playing video games is important, but it is not the be-all and end-all of game testing. It’s just a small component that will help you carry out what you are supposed to be doing as a game tester.

2. Your most important asset as a game tester is your ability to perform on the job. You cannot amaze lead game testers and quality assurance managers by saying that you were a programming whiz at the age of 15. This may be true, but exactly how great are you in tracking down bugs in a game that is barely out of its infancy?

The true measure of a game tester’s effectiveness lies in his ability to discover the bugs that may arise from the many combinations that exist within specific segments of a game.

A game tester will not be assigned the whole game; he will be assigned a specific segment and when he starts discovering bugs in that segment, that’s when he is scrutinized for effectiveness.

3. If you want to spend money just before applying for a game testing position, invest in courses (online or otherwise) so you will have something to show for it. You cannot tell employers that you have reads tons of books on game testing. No one will pay attention at all, and you will go home broken-hearted. It is best for you to read about these things now, so you can prepare yourself for the true realities of this field. It’s not easy to get in, but it is not impossible either.

4. You also need to show your superiors that you are not only professional in what you do, but you also have an almost superhuman passion for video games. This is how you can rise from the ranks of average game testers.

Game testers are not very special in the world of video game production. The supply of potential game testers is high, and if someone leaves, someone else will be more than happy to take his place in a matter of days. If you are dreaming of advancement, show your superiors that you are more than just an average game tester.
