A Primary Guide to The Best Skin Whitening Products

1. Citrus-based whitening creams – Citrus-based whitening creams often contain extracts from different kinds of citrus fruits. The most commonly used fruits are lemons, limes, and oranges.

Fruits like lemons are also rich in vitamin C. Vitamin C are able to lighten skin by regulating the organelles responsible for the production of melanin, the natural pigment of the skin.

2. Kojic acid – Kojic acid is naturally produced by different species of known fungi. The most notable species that is cultivated specifically for kojic acid is Aspergillus oryzae.

Kojic acid is used in cosmetic products, skin care products, and is also used industrially to preserve the color of fish, fruits, and vegetables. When applied topically to the skin, kojic acid slows down the production of melanin, too.

3. Licorice extract – Licorice extract is one of the oldest whitening agents known in the Western world. In Eastern traditional medicine, licorice extract is used to treat different skin disorders. This type of plant extract contains the compound glabridin, which is responsible for its skin-lightening abilities.

This special compound not only whitens skin by inhibiting melanin formation and reducing tissue inflammation (a leading cause of darkening of the skin), but it also helps deflect the harmful effects of the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

4. Mulberry extract – Mulberry naturally contains arbutin, a chemical compound that is related to commercial hydroquinone. However, unlike commercial hydroquinone, which has been correlated with an increased risk for cancer if used for a long time, arbutin has a much cleaner and safer track record and is preferred by many countries.

Additionally, scientific studies show that arbutin can produce as much skin lightening or more without harming the skin cells through induced cytotoxicity.

5. Glutathione – Glutathione is a natural, biosynthesized agent found in humans, plants and animals. Our body produces it naturally to remove toxins and waste. Current studies show that having higher glutathione levels in the body generally means better health.

Glutathione can be used to lighten the skin if it is taken alongside vitamin C. Consult with your dermatologist to find out if you should take oral glutathione or injectable glutathione. Generally speaking, you will need about 2000 mg of glutathione skin whitening agent to kick start the lightening process.
